Thinking of African Safari on your next vacation? Do you have any idea about Africa? It is a vast continent (as big as China, India, the USA and most of Europe put together). Generally, people think that the continent is a mass of savanna plains and grass-hutted villages. The filming of a lot of Hollywood movies is responsible for it. In reality, there’s a vast diversity of scenery, as well as some other practical differences between East Africa and Southern Africa safaris. For instance, when we talk of Southern Africa, we mean the region which includes South Africa but also Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and East Africa is mainly Kenya and Tanzania but also Uganda, Rwanda and now the Congo. Both the parts are fabulous but East Africa surpasses the south in scenic views and game viewing.
Before
planning your African Safari
you need to make a comparison and then to select which part to visit or to
blend your visit in tow regions to have the bests of Africa. The following
differences would help you to travel the right destination.
1. Scenery:
There is little to beat the majestic terrain of the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro
Crater in East Africa. Nothing can surpass the beauty of rainforest of Uganda
and Rwanda with their mountain gorillas. The watery paradise of the Okavango
Delta, the purple sunsets of the Zambezi River and of course, Victoria Falls in
Southern Africa are some of the key beauties that draw visitors attraction
world around.
2. Animal sightings:
In East Africa, the grate wild beast migration from Serengeti to Masai Mara is
the finest spectacular show of wild beasts. Both preys and predators cover
1000s of miles in search of fresh food. But in Southern Africa, you are not
going to see 1000’s of wildebeest but you may see vast herds of elephant or a
large pride of lions. You will be amazed by the up-close and personal predator
sightings in Southern Africa.
3. Safari vehicles:
East Africa operators use closed vehicle with large windows and a pop-up roof
that allows you to stand up and look out of the roof. Southern African vehicles
are completely open-sided, with a shade roof in summer and open to the skies in
winter. In open vehicles you feel closer to the game, you can take excellent
photographs without having to stand up and of course, it’s much better for
birding in the winter months.
4. Cost factor:
South Africa tend to be less expensive as it usually costs less to get to the
safari camps. In East Africa, you have to either take a driver-guide or you
have to take a charter flight. Charter flights are also an option in South
Africa but the camps are also well-served by scheduled airlines which are
usually more cost-effective and shorter, easier road transfers.
